The Japanese government has approved a substantial increase in visa application fees for foreign nationals, marking the first revision of these charges since 1978.The decision was formally adopted during a cabinet meeting and will take effect for visa applications submitted on or after July 1, 2026.Under the new fee structure, the cost of obtaining a single-entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, representing a fivefold increase.Similarly, the fee for a multiple-entry visa will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.

According to Japanese officials, the adjustment reflects the impact of rising prices and higher administrative costs accumulated over several decades without any fee revisions.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated during a press conference that the government considers the increase necessary in light of inflation and changing economic conditions.He also indicated that authorities do not expect the higher visa costs to have an immediate or significant effect on inbound tourism.

The measure affects foreign travelers and visitors who require visas to enter Japan, while the government continues to promote international tourism and economic activity.

The decision highlights Japan's effort to update long-standing administrative fees after nearly half a century of unchanged rates, aligning visa-related charges more closely with current economic realities.
