Jessica Pegula produced a composed comeback to defeat fellow American Iva Jovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and book her place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, matching her best-ever performance at the tournament.

The experienced 32-year-old had expected the 18-year-old Jovic to play aggressively from the outset, and the teenager lived up to those expectations by claiming a scrappy opening set that featured seven service breaks.Pegula admitted afterwards that the first set resembled a 'ping pong match' because neither player was able to hold serve consistently.

After dropping the opener, Pegula adjusted her tactics by improving her first-serve percentage, reducing unforced errors and looking for quicker points.

Those changes shifted the momentum firmly in her favour as she won four consecutive games in the second set after an early setback before taking full control of the contest.

Jovic, who had reached the Australian Open quarter-finals earlier in the season and was hoping for another deep Grand Slam run, struggled to respond as Pegula's consistency and experience began to tell.The third set was one-sided, with Pegula confidently closing out the match while Jovic appeared increasingly discouraged.

The victory places Pegula among a strong group of American women enjoying success at Wimbledon, with five reaching the last 16 for the first time since 2002.She could next face another American, Coco Gauff, should Gauff overcome Belinda Bencic.

Pegula also expressed her hope of earning a first appearance on Wimbledon's Centre Court, saying it would be a special honour and that reaching the semi-finals would make such an opportunity even more meaningful.
