Joe Root is expected to resume his role as England's Test captain following the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket.The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is nearing a decision to appoint Root as Stokes' successor, marking the end of their search for a new Test captain.Root, who previously led England in the longest format before passing the role to Stokes in 2022, is set for a second stint in charge.His appointment would allow current vice-captain Harry Brook to focus on leading England's white-ball teams.

Root's return is anticipated ahead of England's away Test series against South Africa and the day-night Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Test cricket.

The ECB is also finalising coaching plans after Brendon McCullum's resignation, with Marcus Trescothick as the leading candidate for the Pakistan series.Richard Dawson is expected to join the coaching setup as an assistant.This move aims to ensure stability in leadership as England prepares for upcoming international fixtures.
