Joe Sibanyoni and co-accused seek urgent court order to halt arrest in extortion case over jurisdiction dispute
Alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi is expected to learn whether he will be granted bail after the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court reserved judgment following arguments from both the State and his defence team.
Prosecutors opposed bail, alleging that Mogotsi attempted to bribe an investigating officer and supplied false residential information to authorities.
Mogotsi faces several charges, including perjury, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a public place. The charges stem from allegations that he staged his own assassination attempt in Vosloorus in November 2025.During the bail proceedings, State prosecutor Advocate Thami Mpekana presented an affidavit from the investigating officer.
According to the affidavit, Mogotsi allegedly approached the officer after fingerprints and statements had been taken and asked whether there was “something” he could do to stop opposition to his bail application. The officer interpreted the remark as an attempted bribe and said he immediately rejected the suggestion.
The State further argued that Mogotsi misled investigators by providing an address in Mmabatho, North West, where residents allegedly confirmed he did not live.
Prosecutors also claimed authorities previously struggled to trace him and alleged he had supplied false address details during an earlier investigation in 2007.Mogotsi’s lawyer, William Sekgatja, denied the allegations and insisted the address supplied to investigators was accurate. He told the court that a pin location had even been sent to the investigating officer via WhatsApp.Mogotsi maintains his innocence and argued that the State’s case is based on weak and speculative evidence. He told the court he would be able to afford bail of R10,000 while awaiting trial.
