Justin Brownlee ruled out of Gilas Pilipinas' FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers game against Australia due to multiple injuries

Justin Brownlee will not suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in its FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers road game against Australia after being ruled out because of multiple injuries.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced that the 38-year-old naturalized Filipino is dealing with a hamstring strain, peroneal tendinopathy in his right leg, as well as swelling and cartilage defects in his left knee. His absence is a major setback for Gilas as it faces the unbeaten Australian Boomers in Perth.

Brownlee's injuries appeared to affect his recent performance, as he was limited to only five points in the Philippines' 106-102 double-overtime loss to New Zealand. He also did not play in the team's tune-up games against the Manawatu Jets and Franklin Bulls before the New Zealand match.Throughout the qualifiers, Brownlee has averaged 14.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, making him one of the team's most important players.

Even when opponents focus their defence on him, it creates scoring opportunities for teammates such as Juan Gomez de Liaño, Kevin Quiambao, and Carl Tamayo, who all posted strong offensive performances against New Zealand.

With Brownlee unavailable, head coach Tim Cone is expected to rely more heavily on the younger members of the squad as they take on an Australian team that holds a perfect 5-0 record in Group A and has won its games by an average margin of 23.8 points.

Although both teams have already advanced to the next round, every remaining victory is important for Gilas Pilipinas after winning only two of its first five qualifying games, as the team aims to strengthen its chances of reaching the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
