KeNHA issues 30-day notice to remove illegal roadside traders along Kisii–Ahero Highway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30-day eviction notice targeting all illegal roadside traders and occupants along the Kisii–Ahero (A1) Highway, which connects Kisii, Homa Bay, and Kisumu counties in the Nyanza region.

The directive requires all affected individuals and businesses occupying road reserves or operating unauthorised structures along the highway to remove their goods and vacate the area by 27 June 2026.

According to KeNHA, the move is part of a broader road safety and infrastructure improvement initiative aimed at reducing road accidents and ensuring smooth traffic flow along this key commercial route.

The authority noted that roadside encroachment has increasingly narrowed sections of the highway, creating risks for both motorists and pedestrians and contributing to frequent accidents.

The Kisii–Ahero road is an important transport corridor for agricultural produce, manufactured goods, and passenger movement across Western Kenya, making its safety and efficiency a national priority.

KeNHA warned that failure to comply with the notice within the stipulated timeframe will result in enforcement action in line with the Kenya Roads Act and the Physical Planning Act.

While the directive is clear on eviction, it does not specify whether alternative trading spaces will be provided, leaving concerns among traders and possibly requiring intervention from county governments.

The authority has reiterated that the aim is to restore order on the road reserve and enhance safety for all road users while ensuring uninterrupted transport operations along the highway.
