Kenya President Reassigns Deputy President's Roles to Cabinet Secretary Amid Constitutional Disputes

President William Ruto's administration has reportedly restructured key responsibilities of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, transferring them to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.According to confidential documents cited by KTN News, the move follows constitutional clashes over the Intergovernmental Relations Act.

Kindiki was removed as chairperson of the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC), a critical body coordinating fiscal relations between national and county governments.

The reassignment comes after Senate lawmakers raised concerns about conflicting constitutional provisions, arguing that Kindiki's role under Executive Order No.1 of 2025 clashes with Article 147(4) of the Kenyan Constitution.

The Senate advised Ruto to invoke Article 132(3)(c) to formally assign the mandate to Mudavadi, which he did via a letter to the Head of Public Service.

This development has reignited claims by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua that the office of deputy president is being systematically weakened.Gachagua warned Kindiki is facing similar disrespect within the government, echoing his past allegations against his own predecessor.

The move occurs amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election, with succession dynamics within Kenya Kwanza under public scrutiny.
