Koeberg nuclear plant confirms no public risk after routine safety checks

South Africa's Koeberg nuclear power station, the country's only nuclear facility, has confirmed there is no threat to the public following minor radioactive contamination incidents during scheduled maintenance.

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and Eskom officials stated that three incidents at the plant over two weeks were contained and posed no risk of a nuclear accident. The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) confirmed no radioactive material was released into the environment. The incidents occurred during eddy current testing of steam generators, a routine procedure after maintenance work.Workers passed through radiation monitoring systems before leaving the site to ensure contamination levels were safe.Radiation exposure for workers remained extremely low, with most recording zero microsieverts.

Eskom emphasized that safety protocols, including sealed work areas and ventilation units, prevented any uncontrolled release of radioactive material.

The incidents highlight ongoing efforts to maintain international nuclear safety standards at Koeberg, which generates 5% of South Africa's electricity.
