The Kwimba District Council in Tanzania’s Mwanza region has distributed 517 million shillings in loans to 26 community groups through a government-backed economic empowerment program.

The initiative targets women, youth, and people with disabilities, offering 10% interest rate domestic revenue loans to promote financial independence.

During the handover ceremony on July 14, 2026, officials allocated funds as follows: nine women’s groups received 224 million shillings, ten youth groups got 257 million, and seven disability-focused groups were given 36 million.While the program aims to reduce poverty through grassroots entrepreneurship, concerns arise about misused funds.Community Development Officer Ms.Rozalia Magoti warned that some youth groups redirected loans to unrelated activities, risking future funding.Dr.Amon Mkoga emphasized strict adherence to loan purposes and timely repayments, as recycled funds will support more groups.District Commissioner Mr.Ludigija urged compliance with terms to qualify for larger loans.

Success stories like Mary Kalinga’s Upendo Nyambiti Group, which received five consecutive loans due to consistent repayment, highlight the program’s potential.

The initiative aligns with Tanzania’s national strategy to address financial barriers for marginalized groups through accessible credit via local councils.
