A coastal municipality in Pangasinan, specifically Labrador, has officially declared July 12 of every year as “West Philippine Sea Victory Day” through an executive order issued by Mayor Noel Uson.

The declaration is anchored on the landmark 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, which invalidated China’s expansive maritime claims in the West Philippine Sea and affirmed the Philippines’ sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

According to the local government, the commemoration seeks to highlight the importance of the arbitral award as a legal and diplomatic victory for the country, particularly in protecting national territory, maritime resources, and the livelihood of Filipino fishermen who depend on these waters.

The order emphasizes that the protection of the West Philippine Sea is not only a matter of national policy but also an intergenerational responsibility.It encourages civic awareness and patriotism, especially among the youth.

As part of the initiative, the municipal government has urged the Department of Education to lead schools in conducting commemorative activities around July 12, integrating discussions on the historical, legal, and socio-economic significance of the ruling into classroom learning.Local officials also expressed the intention to support educational and cultural programs that strengthen awareness of the country’s maritime rights.Through tourism, culture, and youth development offices, the municipality will provide logistical and promotional assistance for related activities.

The initiative aims to instill deeper appreciation of national sovereignty and encourage young Filipinos to confidently and peacefully uphold the country’s territorial integrity and maritime entitlements in the West Philippine Sea.
