Lagos Launches Tree Planting Initiative to Combat Climate Change and Urbanization

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Sanwo-Olu, has launched a comprehensive tree planting initiative aimed at addressing climate change, urbanization challenges, and environmental degradation.

The program targets the planting of 20,000 trees across the state, with collaboration from all 57 local government areas (LGAs) and community organizations.

The initiative, themed 'Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,' emphasizes collective action to protect the environment and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather, flooding, and land degradation.

Environmental Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab highlighted that tree planting remains one of the most effective nature-based solutions to combat rising temperatures and biodiversity loss.

The state has also introduced the 'Me and My Tree' program, providing free seedlings and incentives to encourage residents to nurture trees for at least 12 months.

Deputy Governor's wife, Oluremi Hamzat, stressed that tree planting is a simple yet powerful way to improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and build resilient communities.

The initiative reflects Lagos's broader strategy to expand green cover as part of efforts to tackle climate change and the effects of rapid urbanization.
