Lagos State prosecutes over 100 offenders for illegal occupation of road medians and environmental violations

The Lagos State Government has revealed that it prosecuted more than 100 individuals within the past one year for illegally occupying road medians and breaching environmental regulations.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during an inspection exercise along the Okokomaiko–Orile road corridor.

The visit was part of ongoing efforts to clear illegal traders and squatters from the area, which has been earmarked for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project.

According to the commissioner, repeated attempts over the years to engage and relocate traders from the road median had not produced lasting compliance, making enforcement necessary.

Wahab explained that the government’s goal is to permanently clear and protect the corridor, stressing that the road infrastructure was constructed with public funds and must not be encroached upon.He noted that the state would continue monitoring the area to prevent displaced traders from returning after removal. The median, he added, is specifically reserved for rail infrastructure development and must remain protected for that purpose.Beyond the issue of encroachment, the commissioner also emphasised environmental sanitation across Lagos State.

He urged residents to properly dispose of waste through approved Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and avoid dumping refuse on roads and public spaces. He further warned market traders to maintain clean environments, stating that environmental hygiene is a shared responsibility.Wahab reiterated that the state’s environmental laws carry sanctions for offenders and that enforcement will continue without fear or favour.

The government, he said, remains committed to protecting infrastructure, improving sanitation, and ensuring sustainable urban development across Lagos.
