Leclerc secures British Grand Prix victory as late safety car denies final-lap showdown

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc claimed victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone after the race ended behind the safety car following a late crash by Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The victory marked Ferrari's 250th Formula One win and Leclerc's first Grand Prix triumph since 2024, achieved at the historic circuit where the Formula One World Championship began in 1950.The closing stages of the race featured several dramatic twists.

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who started from pole position and appeared well placed to challenge for victory, suffered a mechanical problem with 11 laps remaining.

After informing his team of the issue, the 19-year-old Italian gradually dropped down the order and eventually finished 16th, significantly reducing his championship lead over teammate George Russell to 25 points.Verstappen's crash with only four laps left brought out the safety car, preventing any further racing to the finish.Russell benefited from the neutralisation after opting not to pit for fresh tyres, allowing him to finish second.Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in third for Ferrari despite serving a five-second penalty for a jump start earlier in the race. However, he remained under investigation after the finish for a possible yellow-flag infringement.

There was also confusion over whether the safety car would return to the pits for a final racing lap, but it stayed on track until the last corner, denying spectators a competitive sprint to the chequered flag.

Leclerc acknowledged that Antonelli would likely have challenged him for victory had the Mercedes not developed problems and admitted he was relieved that the race did not restart after the late safety car.
