The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to dismantle a clandestine methamphetamine lab but barred the destruction of some contested chemicals.

The court granted the NDLEA's request to dismantle the lab and destroy certain chemicals recovered from three Mexican nationals and seven Nigerians at Iloti Village, Ogun State.However, the court excluded the destruction of some chemicals due to defense objections.The ruling followed a visit by parties to the remote forest site.The NDLEA argued the destruction was necessary for public safety, citing hazardous conditions at the lab.The defense opposed, claiming the substances are key evidence in the trial.Counsel for the defendants warned that destroying the materials would hinder their ability to challenge future evidence.The court adjourned the case to October 26-28 to determine the nature of the contentious substances.The case involves 10 defendants accused of operating a meth lab with drugs valued at ₦480 billion.All defendants pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody.The ruling highlights the tension between law enforcement's duty to secure public safety and the defense's right to examine evidence.
