Veteran playback singer S.Janaki, who sang thousands of songs across South Indian films, passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru on July 11, 2026.Her mortal remains were placed at Maharaja’s College Grounds in Mysuru for public tributes, with last rites scheduled for July 12.The singer, who had a career spanning over six decades, was admitted to Apollo Hospital after health complications and passed away in the evening.

Tributes poured in from political leaders, artists, and fans, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Union Minister Amit Shah expressing condolences.Music composer Hamsalekha appealed for a memorial in Mysuru, while cultural groups in Vizianagaram celebrated her legacy through her songs.Janaki, who worked with iconic music directors like Ilayaraja and A.R.Rahman, is remembered for her versatile voice that transcended linguistic and regional boundaries.Her death marks the end of an era in South Indian cinema, with fans across Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam states mourning her loss.The state government has arranged for her last rites at a farm in Kaniyanahundi, near Mysuru, as per her wishes.
