Stormers overpower Cardiff with dominant forward display led by Ntuthuko Mchunu
Leinster produced a commanding performance in Dublin on Saturday night as they defeated the Lions 59-10 in the United Rugby Championship quarter-final, bringing the South African side’s campaign to an end.
The defending champions quickly asserted their authority, racing into a 14-0 lead within the first quarter and setting the tone for a one-sided encounter.
The Lions, captained by Francke Horn, struggled to cope with Leinster’s intensity, accuracy, and structured attacking play, particularly during a difficult opening half hour where errors in the line-out and poor territorial execution left them under constant pressure.
Despite showing moments of resilience, including a well-worked try by Henco van Wyk, the Lions were unable to match the Irish side’s pace and physicality.
Leinster responded immediately after conceding, extending their lead before half-time through strong forward carries, including a try from James Ryan. After the break, the hosts continued to dominate, with Scott Penny adding another try early in the second half to effectively seal the result.
Although Van Wyk crossed again for his second try, Leinster’s attacking rhythm remained relentless, with further tries from Sam Prendergast, Gus McCarthy, and others stretching the scoreline beyond reach.
The Lions’ discipline and execution issues, combined with Leinster’s clinical finishing, highlighted the gap in knockout experience between the sides.
Nevertheless, the South African outfit can take positives from their season, having secured the SA Shield and earning qualification for next season’s Champions Cup.The match also served as a learning curve for a young squad gaining exposure to high-pressure playoff rugby.Leinster, meanwhile, advanced comfortably to the semi-finals, where they will host the Stormers.
