Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced three byelections in August for the ridings of North Vancouver–Capilano (British Columbia), Beaches-East York (Ontario), and Chicoutimi—Le Fjord (Quebec).These contests will determine whether the Liberal Party can retain its majority in the House of Commons.

The byelections, scheduled for August 31, will replace former Liberal MPs Jonathan Wilkinson (now Canada’s ambassador to the EU) and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, as well as former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who has been appointed to the Senate.

The Liberals currently hold 171 seats (excluding Speaker Francis Scarpaleggia) but face a potential loss of one seat due to cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault’s resignation on August 28.If the Liberals win just one of the three races, they will maintain a technical majority, relying on the Speaker to break ties.The opposition parties are expected to have 165 seats by late September.

Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall plans to resign by August 31, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice will wait for the Quebec election before officially resigning.The Liberals will field candidates Braeden Caley, Tanveer Shahnawaz, and Daniel Gobeil in the respective ridings.The NDP has already provided nomination packages to interested candidates, though details remain pending.This election will test the Liberals’ ability to secure a majority amid shifting seat counts and political dynamics.
