Mudavadi Says Kenya Is Building 16 Ebola Preparedness Centres to Strengthen National Health Response
Medical workers at LifeCare Hospital in Eldoret staged demonstrations outside the facility on May 25, accusing the hospital management of poor working conditions, understaffing, delayed statutory remittances and unfair treatment of Kenyan employees.
The medics said problems at the hospital became worse after a change in leadership, claiming their concerns have repeatedly been ignored by management.According to the protesting workers, staff shortages have forced employees to work long hours, including weekends, without proper rest.
Some medics also alleged that critical medical supplies and drugs are sometimes unavailable, forcing patients to purchase medicine using their own money despite having insurance cover.A major issue raised during the protests was alleged racial discrimination in salaries and treatment. Some workers claimed Indian employees holding junior positions were earning more than Kenyan medical professionals in senior roles. The medics argued that the pay structure at the hospital unfairly favours foreign workers over local staff. The employees further accused the hospital of failing to remit statutory deductions such as HELB, NSSF and SHA contributions on time.Doctors and other workers said these delays have negatively affected their access to healthcare and financial obligations.
Hospital management, through Eldoret branch Human Resource Manager Joshua Rop, denied ignoring employee concerns and said no formal written complaints had been submitted through the proper channels.Management urged workers to resume duty and follow internal grievance procedures while promising openness to dialogue.
LifeCare Hospitals operates several private health facilities across Kenya, including branches in Eldoret, Kikuyu, Bungoma, Migori, Meru and Mlolongo.
