A 25-year-old Zimbabwean national, Eldrie Ngwenya, has been arrested and appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court following a police operation that uncovered a large quantity of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes valued at R35000.

The seizure occurred on 5 July 2026 when members of the Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad intercepted a white Audi A4 suspected of transporting illegal tobacco products in Polokwane and Tzaneen.Ngwenya was arrested during a routine stop in the Ladanna policing precinct, where authorities discovered the illicit cigarettes.The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the illegal tobacco trade, which undermines state revenue and fuels organised crime.Police Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers commended the Flying Squad for their swift action.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by authorities in curbing cross-border smuggling networks that threaten public health and economic integrity.
