Arsenal end Premier League season as champions while West Ham are relegated and Spurs secure survival
Liverpool Football Club have sacked manager Arne Slot following a disappointing defence of their Premier League title, announcing that they are seeking a change in direction.
The decision comes after a difficult season in which the Reds finished fifth in the league, 25 points behind champions Arsenal, despite a massive investment of nearly £450 million in new signings during the previous transfer window.
Across all competitions, Liverpool suffered 19 defeats, while their total of 60 Premier League points marked their lowest return since the 2015/16 campaign.
Slot, who had been praised in his debut season for guiding Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th league title after replacing Jurgen Klopp, ultimately came under heavy pressure due to inconsistent performances, tactical concerns, and reported dressing room unrest.
A social media post by Mohamed Salah calling for a return to Klopp’s high-intensity “heavy metal football” was widely interpreted as a criticism of Slot’s more cautious style, further intensifying scrutiny.
Despite initially being expected to stay on after securing Champions League qualification, Fenway Sports Group opted for a managerial change following growing fan dissatisfaction.
In a statement, the club thanked Slot for his contributions, including the Premier League title, and confirmed that the search for a successor is already underway.
Outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is now strongly linked with the role after guiding his side to European qualification for the first time in their history and finishing the season with an 18-game unbeaten run.His previous working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is also seen as a factor in his favour. While former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso had been considered by fans, he is reportedly set to take charge at Chelsea next season.
Slot’s tenure was also marked by challenges such as injuries to key signings and the emotional impact of the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident.
