The long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, is set to open on Monday, July 27, 2026.Ahead of this milestone, local dignitaries have been invited to a ceremonial event on Friday, July 23, to mark the occasion.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens confirmed that the ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Friday morning, with the official opening scheduled for Monday.The bridge, a $6.4 billion project funded entirely by Canada, has faced delays due to political uncertainties, including former U.S.President Donald Trump’s threats to block its completion unless the U.S.received compensation.

Despite these challenges, officials remain optimistic about the bridge’s timely opening, citing previous commitments from both Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trump.

Brian Masse, a former NDP MP for the region, highlighted the significance of the event in honoring the legacy of local leaders who advocated for the project.

The ceremony will also commemorate the start of pedestrian and bike access across the bridge on August 5, 2026, which will reduce reliance on the existing Ambassador Bridge.
