Maine Community Successfully Moved a Meeting Hall Nine Miles by Sea in 1951

The article recounts an unusual engineering project carried out in 1951 along the coast of Maine, when residents of Goose Rocks Beach successfully relocated a large meeting hall by floating it across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Goose Rocks Beach Association wanted to transform the building into a new community center, but transporting such a large structure over the area's narrow coastal roads was considered difficult and costly. To solve the problem, engineer J.N.Jutras of Lewiston proposed an unconventional method that relied on the region's powerful tides. The operation began by positioning large pontoons next to the building during high tide.As the water receded, the pontoons settled onto the sand, allowing workers to jack up the structure and secure it on top. When the tide returned, the rising water lifted both the pontoons and the building, effectively turning the hall into a floating vessel.

A boat then towed the structure approximately nine miles north to Goose Rocks Beach, where it remained anchored overnight before being brought ashore during the next high tide.

Many local residents, including experienced lobstermen, doubted the plan would succeed and predicted the building would be destroyed during the voyage.Despite the skepticism, Dorothy Mignault, president of the Goose Rocks Beach Association, rode inside the building throughout the journey.Upon arrival, community members helped guide the floating structure safely onto land. The relocation was documented by LIFE magazine photographer Yale Joel and became a memorable example of local ingenuity.

The project was completed without significant damage, and the building still stands today as the Goose Rocks Beach Community House, continuing to host community activities and events decades after its remarkable journey by sea.
