Man sentenced to 16 months in prison for antisemitic assault and threats against Orthodox Jewish building inspector

A 48-year-old man, Shafiq Rahman, has been sentenced to 16 months' imprisonment after admitting racially aggravated common assault and using threatening and abusive language against an Orthodox Jewish building inspector in Slough, Berkshire.

During the incident, Rahman confronted Moishe Posen while he was inspecting a property, repeatedly directing antisemitic abuse at him, calling him a 'dirty Jew', threatening to 'break' his jaw and accusing him of 'killing babies in Palestine'.

The confrontation was recorded on Mr Posen's mobile phone, while a passing motorist was heard encouraging the attacker to become physically violent. The abuse only ended after a neighbour threatened to call the police.

The court also sentenced Rahman for separate offences relating to his XL Bully dog, which seriously injured another man in 2025, leaving the victim hospitalised for 13 days and requiring multiple operations. He additionally pleaded guilty to criminal damage after spitting inside a police van following his arrest.

In a victim impact statement, Mr Posen described feeling distressed and questioning whether it was safe to continue wearing visible symbols of his Jewish faith in Britain. He said the experience had made him consider concealing his religious identity and reflected on his family's history of fleeing Nazi persecution.

Jewish organisations, including the Community Security Trust, Campaign Against Antisemitism and the Holocaust Educational Trust, condemned the attack as part of a wider rise in antisemitic incidents across the UK.

The assault occurred during a period in which several Jewish community sites, including ambulances and places of worship, had also been targeted in separate attacks, prompting renewed concern about the safety of Britain's Jewish community.
