Manchester driver and passenger jailed after 139mph crash killed commuter

Two men have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after a fatal high-speed crash in Manchester that killed 50-year-old Sylvester Abayomi. The collision happened on 9 March on Kingsway when a Volkswagen Golf GTI driven by 20-year-old Uways Hussain ran a red light at approximately 139mph in a 30mph zone and struck Abayomi’s vehicle as he travelled to work.

Prosecutors said Hussain and the car’s owner, 23-year-old Usmon Mahmood, had spent time filming themselves driving dangerously, weaving through traffic, ignoring traffic lights and inhaling nitrous oxide before the crash occurred.

Manchester Crown Court heard that following the collision, the pair attempted to flee the scene and discussed reporting the vehicle as stolen while an automatic emergency call from Hussain’s Apple Watch alerted emergency services.

Judge Nicholas Dean described their behaviour as a sustained and deliberate course of extremely dangerous conduct and said the crash was entirely avoidable.

Abayomi’s partner, Denise Doyle, delivered an emotional statement in court, describing him as a caring and hardworking man who should have returned home safely. She criticised the defendants for leaving him to die alone without showing compassion.

Hussain admitted causing death by dangerous driving, driving uninsured and failing to provide a specimen, while Mahmood admitted aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving and related offences.Hussain received a sentence of 11 years and eight months, while Mahmood was jailed for 12 years and nine months.

Greater Manchester Police said the case involved one of the worst examples of speeding officers had encountered and noted that convicting a passenger for aiding and abetting dangerous driving resulting in death was highly unusual nationally.
