The Indian government has mandated that all seafarers holding a valid Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) complete a yoga-based wellness training program within one year.
The initiative, named 'Sagar Mein Yog' (SMY), is structured around 10 thematic wellness pillars spanning 19 hours and 14 minutes of instruction.
These pillars include social wellness (teamwork and conflict resolution), occupational wellness (career growth and feedback practices), physical wellness (nutrition, fitness, and sexual health), intellectual wellness (critical thinking and risk management), economic wellness (budgeting and taxation), cultural wellness (cross-cultural competence), and spiritual wellness (meditation, chanting, mudras, and breathwork).
The program is aligned with international maritime conventions like the STCW 2014 and MLC 2006, as well as national visions such as Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kal Vision 2047.
Training will be delivered via a dedicated Learning Management System, requiring all candidates at DGS-approved Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) to complete the modules. The initiative aims to enhance seafarers' mental, physical, and emotional resilience amid challenging maritime environments.
