US Defence Secretary highlights India’s growing military strength and defence modernisation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in New Delhi that India did not express any concerns regarding Pakistan’s reported role as a mediator or facilitator in the ongoing diplomatic exchanges between the United States and Iran.
He clarified that while India remains consistently concerned about terrorism emanating from Pakistani territory, this issue was not linked to Pakistan’s involvement in facilitating backchannel communication in the US-Iran context.
Rubio explained that India’s primary security focus continues to be on terrorist groups operating across the border in Pakistan, which have historically targeted Indian interests.
However, he emphasized that the question of Pakistan acting as a mediator in the Iran-related diplomatic efforts was not raised during discussions with Indian counterparts.
According to him, India would likely not object to such a role, as their concerns regarding Pakistan are centred on security and terrorism rather than diplomatic engagement in third-country conflicts.
His remarks come amid ongoing international efforts to manage tensions between the US and Iran, where reports suggest that Pakistan may have played a supportive role in facilitating communication channels.Rubio indicated that Pakistan’s involvement in this context is being viewed separately from broader India-Pakistan tensions.
The comments highlight the nuanced diplomatic positions of regional powers as they navigate overlapping security and geopolitical interests in West Asia and South Asia. The statement also reflects the US attempt to balance relationships with both India and Pakistan while managing sensitive negotiations with Iran.
