Legal experts warn Alberta separation process would create major constitutional and economic uncertainty
Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu has offered new details about her decision to cross the floor and join the Liberal Party, citing dissatisfaction within the Conservative caucus and describing what she called a “toxic environment.
” In a recent video interview, Gladu said she had been considering leaving politics altogether and returning to her previous career in engineering, as she was frustrated with life on the Opposition benches and felt constrained in her ability to engage meaningfully in parliamentary work and public debate.
She explained that a conversation with a community podcaster from her riding, as well as a subsequent interaction with federal minister Evan Solomon, helped shift her thinking about her political future.
According to Gladu, that exchange eventually led to discussions that culminated in her decision to join the Liberals on April 8, a move that strengthened the Liberal caucus and contributed to their governing position.Gladu also recounted her meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, stating that she was candid about her long-standing criticisms of his party.
She said Carney responded in a conciliatory manner, emphasizing forward-looking collaboration and referencing her professional background in engineering and business.
She further described discussions about policy concerns, including anti-hate legislation and firearms regulations, as well as her potential committee roles within the Liberal caucus.
Since crossing the floor, Gladu said she has experienced mixed reactions, including support from some colleagues but also hostility from others, along with threats and vandalism targeting her constituency office.
She also reflected on tensions within the Conservative Party under Pierre Poilievre’s leadership and suggested that internal dynamics and electoral concerns influenced broader dissatisfaction among some members.Gladu stated she intends to continue representing her riding while adjusting to her new role within the Liberal caucus.
