Middle Eastern streaming platform MBC Shahid has acquired Lebanese comedian John Achkar’s stand-up comedy special “Tryin’” (“Aam Jarrib”), marking a significant moment for Arabic-language comedy on streaming platforms. The special was filmed at the historic L’Olympia concert hall in Paris during Achkar’s performance on Oct.23, becoming the first Arabic-language comedy performance ever staged at the iconic venue.L’Olympia has previously hosted internationally recognized comedians such as Chris Rock, Gad Elmaleh, and Eddie Izzard. The special will premiere exclusively across the Middle East and North Africa region on MBC Shahid starting May 27.Achkar’s global comedy tour, which included sold-out performances in 85 cities, was produced by Dubai-based company Front Row Filmed Entertainment. The company also confirmed that “Tryin’” is the first project in a planned six-title Arabic stand-up comedy slate currently in development.
According to the producers, the show combines fast-paced and personal storytelling focused on the realities of modern Arab life, touching on themes relevant to both residents of the Arab world and diaspora communities abroad.
Achkar described the project as more than a comedy special, saying it represents an effort to elevate Arab humor and storytelling to the level of major international productions.
Front Row CEO Gianluca Chakra emphasized that the partnership with MBC Shahid demonstrates growing support for Arabic stand-up comedy and could help expand opportunities for comedians from the region.
The agreement is being presented as an important step toward bringing Arabic-language stand-up into mainstream streaming distribution at a larger scale.
