Metropolitan Police review referral over £37,500 donation linked to Robert Jenrick's 2024 Conservative leadership campaign

The Metropolitan Police are reviewing a referral from the Electoral Commission concerning a £37,500 donation made during Robert Jenrick's 2024 campaign for the Conservative Party leadership.

The inquiry relates to allegations that part of a £100,000 donation, provided in four instalments by British businessman Phillip Ullmann through Spott Fitness Ltd, may have originated from an impermissible foreign source.

Reports claim that £37,500 of the funding was linked to US businessman Gary Klopfenstein, who pleaded guilty to investment fraud in 2024, raising questions about whether UK electoral law governing political donations was breached.

The Electoral Commission investigated the matter before referring it to the Metropolitan Police, which has confirmed that the referral is currently under review but has declined to comment further while the process continues.Robert Jenrick, who has since joined Reform UK after leaving the Conservative Party, strongly rejected the allegations. He stated that neither he nor his campaign knowingly accepted any impermissible donations and described the claims as politically motivated.

Jenrick also said he has never met or communicated with Klopfenstein and only became aware of the alleged connection after being contacted by the Electoral Commission.

According to his spokesman, the campaign carried out the required checks on the donation and fully cooperated with the Electoral Commission's investigation by supplying records intended to demonstrate compliance with electoral law.

Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake said the public deserved clarity, arguing that UK law prohibits foreign political donations and requires the true source of contributions to be disclosed.

At this stage, the police have announced only that they are reviewing the referral, and no criminal findings or charges have been made against Jenrick.
