Microsoft to restrict Office 2019 for Mac to read-only mode starting July 13 due to expired certificate

Microsoft will begin restricting functionality in Office 2019 for Mac starting July 13, 2026, effectively preventing users from editing, saving, or creating new documents in key applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. The change is triggered by the expiration of a digital certificate required for the software to operate in full functionality mode.

Because Office 2019 for Mac reached its end of support in October 2023, it is no longer receiving updates that would allow Microsoft to renew or maintain this certificate. As a result, the software will enter what Microsoft describes as a “reduced functionality mode.” In this state, users will still be able to open existing files and print documents, but all editing capabilities will be disabled. This effectively turns the applications into read-only tools.

The restriction is expected to impact individuals, educational users, and businesses that continue to rely on perpetual licenses of Office 2019 for Mac, particularly those avoiding subscription-based alternatives like Microsoft 365.

Microsoft has advised affected users to upgrade to newer supported options, including Microsoft 365 subscription plans, Office 2024 perpetual licenses, or browser-based Office applications. The company states that these versions will continue receiving necessary updates, including certificate renewals, to avoid service disruptions.

The decision has sparked criticism from some users and observers who argue that it represents planned obsolescence, since customers who purchased lifetime licenses may lose core functionality years after purchase.

While software end-of-support policies are common in the industry, disabling essential features in already-installed software has raised concerns about long-term digital ownership and user dependence on recurring subscription models.
