Mike Sonko Details Tensions Over Northlands City Drainage Project with Uhuru Kenyatta

Mike Sonko, former Nairobi governor, has revealed how his friendship with Uhuru Kenyatta soured over the Northlands City development project. The multi-billion-shilling initiative, backed by Kenyatta's family, faced challenges due to inadequate drainage in Kiambu County.

Sonko explained that planners sought to channel waste through Nairobi's drainage system to Ruai, requiring displacement of over a million slum dwellers.

He refused to support demolitions, fearing it would harm his political career, leading to the involvement of Lieutenant General Mohamed Badi to carry out the work. The project, spanning 11,576 acres in Ruiru, aims to host 250,000 residents over 50 years, combining residential, industrial, and recreational zones.

Sonko's defiance highlighted tensions between political ambitions and infrastructure challenges, underscoring the complexities of large-scale urban development in Kenya.
