The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) approved a P85 daily wage increase for minimum wage workers in Metro Manila (NCR), effective in two tranches.

The first increase of P60 will take effect on July 19, 2026, raising the minimum wage to P780, while the remaining P25 will be implemented on January 20, 2027.This adjustment aims to address inflation, rising living costs, and improve the standard of living for workers.However, labor groups and economists argue that the hike falls short of meeting the actual needs of families.For instance, a family of five in Metro Manila requires at least P1,279 daily to live decently, according to the IBON Foundation.

The P780 minimum wage remains far below this threshold, with essential expenses like food, utilities, and transportation exceeding the current income.

Critics, including the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), demand a higher wage increase, citing repeated price hikes in fuel, electricity, and other necessities.

While DOLE claims the adjustment balances economic factors, labor advocates push for a more substantial raise to ensure workers can afford basic needs.The debate highlights the gap between policy decisions and the real-life struggles of low-income families.
