Mpumalanga Hawks secure preservation order for Toyota Hilux found with concealed dagga

The Hawks in Mpumalanga have obtained a preservation order for a Toyota Hilux valued at approximately R180,000 after police discovered four parcels of dagga concealed in the vehicle during a stop-and-search operation at the Jeppes Reef Port of Entry. The incident occurred on October 8, 2025, when officers detected a suspicious odour emanating from the white Hilux.

An initial search found no items, but a more thorough inspection revealed four plastic-wrapped parcels hidden in the vehicle's chassis, beneath the gearbox, and under the left front door. The driver, who is also the registered owner, allegedly admitted to possessing the dagga and was arrested and charged with dealing in dagga. The vehicle was seized and booked into the SAPS 13 exhibit register at Schoemansdal SAPS for further investigation.

The High Court in Mbombela granted the preservation order following an application by the National Prosecuting Authority, Hawks Financial Accounting Investigators, and operational members.

Provincial Head Major General Nico Gerber commended the collaborative efforts of investigators and SAPS personnel for ensuring assets used in criminal activities are preserved. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and uphold legal processes in Mpumalanga.
