Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing holds talks with NSA Ajit Doval during first visit to India

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi on Sunday, marking the Myanmar leader's first visit to India since assuming office in April.

This visit comes just under two months after Min Aung Hlaing became President following Myanmar's parliamentary elections held in December and January, elections conducted after the political upheaval caused by the military coup of February 2021 which removed the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.The discussions are expected to focus on matters of border security, connectivity, trade, and other areas of mutual interest.Prior to this, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had met the Myanmar President to discuss key facets of the bilateral partnership.

Myanmar shares a strategic 1,640-km border with several northeastern Indian states such as Nagaland and Manipur, making it a crucial neighbour for India.

This visit is significant as part of India's Neighbourhood First policy, aiming to enhance engagement with Myanmar in security, infrastructure, and regional stability.

Additionally, Myanmar's NSA is expected to visit India in July for the fifth BIMSTEC National Security Advisers meeting, offering further opportunities for strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations.
