Wimbledon Royal Box: Celebrities and Influencers Attend
Naomi Osaka produced one of the standout performances of the Wimbledon championships by defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time in her career.
The former world number one dominated much of the match with powerful serving and aggressive groundstrokes, preventing Sabalenka from creating a single break point.
The victory also marked Osaka's first Grand Slam quarter-final on a surface other than hard courts and ended Sabalenka's remarkable streak of 21 consecutive Grand Slam tie-break victories.
Following match point, Sabalenka showed her frustration by hitting a tennis ball high out of Centre Court, prompting boos from sections of the crowd before she walked to the net to congratulate Osaka.Speaking afterwards, Sabalenka admitted she had struggled throughout the match and said Osaka had simply outplayed her.She added that she had managed to control her emotions, resisting the temptation to damage her racket or the grass courts.
The defeat represents Sabalenka's earliest Grand Slam exit since the 2022 French Open and continues a difficult run in major tournaments after disappointing results earlier in the season.Despite the loss, she praised Osaka's performance and wished her success in the remainder of the tournament.Reflecting on the defeat, Sabalenka said she would take time away from tennis to recover mentally before preparing for future events.Osaka's victory also guarantees that Wimbledon will crown a new women's singles champion for the tenth consecutive year.
