The National Treasury has temporarily withheld equitable share transfers from seven KwaZulu-Natal municipalities due to governance failures, sparking concerns about the impact on vulnerable communities.

Equitable share funding, which supports essential services like water and electricity for poor households, is now under threat for municipalities such as Impendle and uMkhanyakude.

Officials from affected areas, including Mayor Kho Dlamini of Impendle, have expressed fears that the funding suspension could lead to service disruptions and financial instability.The Treasury's decision targets 69 municipalities nationwide, citing issues like unauthorized expenditure and poor financial management.

While the Treasury has indicated it may reverse the decision if municipalities meet recovery conditions, local leaders are working to address the concerns.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance (Cogta) is assisting affected municipalities, emphasizing that the measure aims to improve accountability.

However, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) warns that without addressing systemic financial challenges, the funding suspension could harm service delivery and lead to late payments to critical providers like Eskom.The situation highlights the tension between fiscal discipline and the need to maintain essential services for disadvantaged communities.
