The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan has issued a comprehensive weather and disaster alert warning of increased risks of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods, landslides, and urban flooding across northern and central regions of the country between July 1 and July 4.
According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), the situation is being driven by an active monsoon system combined with westerly weather waves and rising temperatures, which are accelerating glacier melt in mountainous regions.
The advisory highlights that areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) are particularly vulnerable to GLOF incidents due to rapidly melting glaciers and expected heavy rainfall.Districts such as Hunza, Skardu, Chitral, Swat, Astore, and others located in glacier-fed valleys have been advised to remain on high alert.Authorities warned that sudden flash floods, debris flows, rockfalls, and landslides may pose serious threats to local communities in these regions.
NEOC also issued a separate flash flood warning, stating that rainfall combined with westerly disturbances may cause rising water levels in hill torrents and seasonal streams across KP, Punjab, Balochistan, AJK, and GB.
Several districts including Peshawar, Nowshera, Swat, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, and parts of Balochistan are expected to experience flooding in low-lying and vulnerable areas.Urban flooding in major cities is also anticipated, which may disrupt traffic, damage infrastructure, and inundate residential zones.
The NDMA has directed all relevant authorities to ensure preparedness, maintain drainage systems, monitor river flows, and strengthen emergency response mechanisms.
Citizens living near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow official safety instructions during the forecast period.
