Nevers Mumba calls for African youth unity and cross-border cooperation at YouLead Summit in Arusha

Former Zambia Vice President Nevers Mumba has called on African youth to remove colonial-era divisions that still limit cooperation and development across the continent.

Speaking during the 9th YouLead Summit 2026 held in Arusha on May 28, Dr Mumba said African countries must encourage unity among young people instead of allowing borders, visa restrictions and inherited systems from colonial rule to continue separating them. The summit gathered more than 300 youth leaders from different African countries.

Dr Mumba explained that Africa’s young population, estimated by the African Union at over 400 million people aged between 15 and 35, can become a major force for economic growth, innovation and social transformation if united under a shared vision. He said young Africans should build trust, collaborate across borders and take leadership roles early in life.

He also warned that Africa has less than five years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, making it necessary for governments and youth to increase efforts in addressing poverty, unemployment, inequality and climate change.

According to him, young innovators are already leading important work in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, technology and sustainable business.

Dr Mumba further encouraged youth to reject corruption and greed, saying Africa needs ethical and trustworthy leadership focused on service to citizens.

Participants at the summit from Tanzania and Kenya said the forum helps young people exchange ideas, discuss shared challenges and directly engage with decision-makers.

The YouLead Summit was organised by MS-Training Centre for Development Cooperation together with the East African Community and other international partners to strengthen youth participation in Africa’s future development agenda.
