New Rural Employment Scheme Focuses on Water Security and Disaster Mitigation

The new rural employment scheme VB-G RAM G, launched from July 1, emphasizes strengthening water security in villages by allocating 107 of 318 permissible works to address rain deficiency issues.

This initiative aims to tackle challenges posed by climate change, allowing gram panchayats to undertake disaster mitigation projects like drought and flood management.

During a national conference, Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted the risk of below-normal rainfall, urging states to prepare for adverse situations by enhancing water conservation structures. The scheme's framework includes three thematic areas: core rural infrastructure, rural livelihoods, and disaster mitigation.New works like cold storage facilities and skilling centers are being introduced for the first time. The minister also warned that 315 districts could be affected by El Niño-triggered rain deficits, with 111 being particularly vulnerable.States like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha are under special attention for preparedness.
