New Zealand has begun an emergency effort to protect some of its most endangered native bird species after the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza was detected in the country for the first time.

The virus was found in two brown skuas, marking the arrival of a disease that has already killed millions of birds worldwide and infected numerous mammal species.Although only two infected birds have been identified so far, authorities are acting quickly to reduce the risk of widespread transmission.

As part of the response, conservation officials are vaccinating approximately 300 breeding pairs across five critically endangered native bird species, including the rare kākāpō and takahē.New Zealand's unique wildlife evolved in isolation for millions of years, resulting in many bird species found nowhere else on Earth.

Because many of these birds have small populations and limited habitats, experts fear that a significant outbreak could have devastating consequences.

Officials have also increased surveillance, advised the public not to handle sick or dead birds, introduced stricter biosecurity measures at wildlife sites and zoos, and warned poultry producers to prepare for possible restrictions.

The country is also monitoring vulnerable marine wildlife, including penguins, fur seals, and the endangered New Zealand sea lion, after similar outbreaks overseas caused severe losses among seal populations.

While authorities emphasize that years of preparation have provided an advantage, they acknowledge that H5N1 is likely to remain a long-term challenge.

Their focus has shifted from preventing the virus from entering the country to minimizing its impact on New Zealand's globally unique wildlife and agricultural industries.
