Two Nigerian journalists, Youssouf Seriba and Oumarou Kané, have been released from Kollo Prison after eight months of detention, according to a press release by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).

They were arrested on October 30, 2025, alongside four other journalists and a driver, and charged under Niger's Cybercrime Law for allegedly disseminating an official invitation to a press briefing about the Solidarity Fund for the Protection of the Homeland.The invitation, initially sent to Saraounia TV, went viral online and was shared by activists.While Seriba and Kané were released, the third journalist, Ibro Chaibou, remains in custody.The MFWA condemned the continued detention of Chaibou, urging authorities to drop charges and ensure laws are not misused to suppress dissent.

The case highlights concerns about the misuse of cybercrime legislation to target journalists, raising questions about press freedom and legal accountability in Niger.The foundation reiterated its call for the immediate release of all detained journalists and the review of charges against them.
