NGE Hosts 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture to Discuss Media and Election Integrity
The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its condolences to the government and people of the People's Republic of China following the deadly landslide that happened in Tanchang County, Gansu Province, on July 7, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria sympathised with the families who lost their loved ones and those affected by the disaster, which claimed at least 21 lives while rescue operations were ongoing.The government also prayed for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries and for strength and comfort for bereaved families.
Nigeria commended the prompt response of the Chinese authorities and emergency rescue teams for their efforts to save lives and provide assistance to victims.
The statement further stressed the long-standing strategic relationship between Nigeria and China, noting that both countries have continued to build strong ties based on mutual respect, friendship and cooperation.
Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with China during this difficult period and expressed confidence that the Chinese government and people would recover from the tragedy.According to Chinese state media, the landslide struck Rencang Village in Dangchang County at about 6:56 a.m., burying dozens of people.Search and rescue operations later ended after authorities confirmed 21 deaths.The Chinese government has reportedly approved 30 million yuan in reconstruction funding to support recovery efforts in the affected community.
The landslide happened on the same day severe storms and heavy rainfall in southern and central China caused additional casualties, leaving around 17 people dead and hundreds injured.The incidents highlight the recurring threat of natural disasters across different parts of China, especially during the summer rainy season.
