25-year-old woman arrested for killing husband's mistress' infant in Benue
Human rights activist Agena R.Ande is pushing for a full criminal investigation, independent autopsy, and coroner's inquest into the death of Mary Habila, a physiotherapist found dead in the house of Minister of Works, David Umahi.
In a statement titled 'A Press Conference of Excuses Is an Insult to the Dead – Justice Must Not Be Buried With the Body,' Ande argues that the circumstances of Habila's death require a transparent forensic investigation before burial.
He criticizes the Nigerian authorities for handling the case with insufficient rigor, suggesting that influential officials are treated differently under the law.Ande claims that if the situation involved an ordinary Nigerian, law enforcement would have acted swiftly, with an autopsy ordered immediately.
He emphasizes that every suspicious death must be investigated regardless of the social status of the deceased, citing constitutional duties and international human rights instruments.
The activist demands a homicide investigation by the Nigeria Police Force under the National Human Rights Commission's oversight, forensic examination of the scene, preservation of evidence, and formal questioning of all witnesses.
He also calls on international organizations to monitor the case, stressing that the way Nigeria handles Habila's death reflects the country's values.
