Former Minister Alleges N200m Bribe Demand During Budget Defence
A group of serving Nigerian Army personnel have petitioned President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and top defense officials over alleged delays in processing voluntary discharge applications.
The soldiers claim the Army is unlawfully retaining those who have applied to leave military service, citing an unofficial embargo on voluntary exits.
In a petition obtained by SaharaReporters, the soldiers accused the Army of holding them against their will, stating their applications were left unattended or deliberately delayed since the appointment of Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu in 2025.They emphasized they are not deserting but seeking to pursue civilian careers, education, and personal goals. The petitioners warned of severe personal and financial impacts, including missed opportunities and emotional distress. They demanded immediate review of pending applications, transparency in processing timelines, and adherence to constitutional rights. The soldiers argued that while the Army must maintain operational readiness, it cannot indefinitely restrict voluntary exits.
They urged authorities to investigate the delays and ensure lawful discharge procedures are followed to protect personnel welfare and institutional integrity.
