Twenty-five years after the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio in the remote Australian outback, Northern Territory Police have released a series of previously unseen photographs from the investigation.

Falconio was shot and killed on 14 July 2001 along the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek while travelling with his partner Joanne Lees in their orange Volkswagen Kombi van.Lees was bound and escaped, but Falconio's body has never been found despite extensive searches.The killer, Bradley John Murdoch, was convicted in 2005 and died in prison in 2025 from throat cancer without revealing the location of the remains.

The newly released images include photos of a blood-spattered Joanne Lees shortly after the attack, the cable ties used to bind her, Murdoch staring directly at the camera, crime scene evidence such as bloodstains in the van, and other items from the investigation.Police hope these images will jog memories and encourage anyone with information to come forward.A substantial reward of $500,000 is still on offer for details leading to the discovery of Falconio's body.

The release marks a significant milestone in one of Australia's most enduring unsolved aspects of a high-profile case, with authorities reaffirming their commitment to providing closure for Falconio's family and Lees.Superintendent Mark Grieve noted the intent to raise public awareness and potentially prompt new tips.

This development comes alongside other recent releases, such as interview footage with Murdoch, underscoring ongoing efforts to resolve the mystery surrounding the victim's final resting place.
