Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has launched its once-weekly basal insulin injection, Awiqli, in India for the treatment of diabetes in adults.
This innovation replaces the need for daily insulin injections with a weekly dose, significantly reducing the annual number of injections from 365 to just 52.The therapy, designed for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients, aims to lower psychological and physical barriers to insulin initiation.
Novo Nordisk India Managing Director Vikrant Shrotriya highlighted that the injection will be available in two pen sizes (700 units and 2,100 units) at a cost of ₹3.73 per unit. The company emphasized that this reduces the burden of daily injections, which often deter patients from starting insulin therapy. With 4,500 distributors nationwide, Awiqli is set to improve diabetes management by offering greater control and enhancing quality of life. The launch marks India as the seventh market to adopt this therapy, underscoring its potential to transform diabetes care in the country.
