A violent Fourth of July holiday weekend in Brooklyn left an NYPD detective and several civilians, including four children, injured in separate shooting incidents.

Early Sunday morning in Crown Heights, Detective Robert Karroll of the NYPD Sex Offender Monitoring Unit was shot in the back while assigned to a special violence reduction detail.

Authorities said the bullet struck his ballistic vest, preventing life-threatening injuries, and he is expected to make a full recovery after being transported to Kings County Hospital.Another officer suffered minor injuries during the encounter.According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, officers were sitting in an unmarked police vehicle when an armed 18-year-old approached.The exact sequence of events remains under investigation because there was no body-camera footage.Officers exited the vehicle, exchanged gunfire with the suspect, and later pursued him on foot.The suspect was arrested after allegedly resisting officers, who used a Taser to take him into custody.Police recovered a SAR 9mm handgun.Hours earlier, a separate mass shooting in the Coney Island neighborhood wounded eight people, including four children ages 6, 7, 12, and 14.Police said seven victims were in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman remained in critical condition.

City officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, expressed relief that Detective Karroll survived because of his protective vest and emphasized the dangers faced by police officers.

Investigators continue to review surveillance footage from nearby businesses to determine the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting, while both incidents remain under active investigation.
