The Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) has raised concerns over a proposed amendment to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act that could classify preaching in commercial vehicles as a commercial activity alongside hawking.
In a statement signed by Elder Israel Akinadewo, OAIC emphasized that preaching is a constitutional right under freedom of religion and expression, and should not be equated with commercial practices. While acknowledging the need for road safety, the association urged lawmakers to avoid measures that unnecessarily restrict these freedoms.
They highlighted that preaching in vehicles has been used by individuals to share religious messages and stressed the importance of balancing public safety with constitutional rights.
OAIC called on President Bola Tinubu to review the bill carefully and urged the National Assembly to consult religious groups, civil society, and other stakeholders before finalizing the legislation.
The organization emphasized its commitment to the rule of law and peaceful coexistence, encouraging preachers to conduct their activities responsibly without infringing on public order.
