Oleksandr Usyk stops Rico Verhoeven in late controversial finish to retain WBC title

Oleksandr Usyk retained his WBC heavyweight title after a dramatic and contentious late stoppage victory over kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven, who was competing in only his second professional boxing bout.

The fight took place at the pyramids of Giza and developed into a closely contested encounter, with Verhoeven reportedly outboxing Usyk on points through much of the contest.

The Dutchman, better known for his dominance in kickboxing, impressed by fighting on the front foot, winning exchanges in the clinch and landing clean shots to both head and body, while Usyk appeared unusually subdued during the early and middle rounds. As the bout entered the penultimate 11th round, Usyk increased his pressure and managed to turn the fight decisively. He caught Verhoeven with an uppercut in the corner, sending him to his knees for a knockdown.

Although Verhoeven beat the referee’s count and was granted extra time to recover while his mouthguard was replaced, Usyk immediately resumed his attack, forcing the referee to halt the contest at 2:59 of the round as Verhoeven was trapped on the ropes.

The stoppage came just before the bell, prompting widespread debate over whether the referee intervened too early or correctly prioritised fighter safety.

After the fight, Verhoeven expressed disappointment, stating he believed the stoppage was premature but acknowledging it was ultimately the referee’s decision.

Usyk, meanwhile, dedicated his victory to his family and his country, referencing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the emotional support he receives from his loved ones.Despite concerns about an early finish, the result allowed Usyk to extend his unbeaten record and retain his title.

Attention has also turned to his next opponent, with mandatory challenger Agit Kabayel mentioned, although suggestions were made that Verhoeven could be in line for a rematch.
