Ombudsman filing of plunder case vs Marcoleta expected to proceed this week, Clavano says
Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano confirmed that the filing of plunder and other related charges against Senator Rodante Marcoleta and three other individuals is progressing as scheduled.
The cases stem from alleged undeclared campaign donations amounting to around P75 million, which Marcoleta reportedly received in January 2025 during his tenure as a Sagip party-list representative and before the official campaign period for the 2025 Senate elections.
According to Clavano, the amount in question could have significantly increased the senator’s declared net worth, raising concerns about possible violations of laws governing public officials’ financial disclosures and campaign contributions.
He explained that while candidates are allowed to solicit donations during the campaign period, such contributions must remain within legal limits and must be properly declared.Failure to comply with these requirements, he noted, constitutes a violation of election and anti-corruption laws.
The Office of the Ombudsman also pointed out that no declaration of the said amount was made by Marcoleta, which forms part of the basis for the planned filing of charges.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla earlier stated that the investigation is being conducted based on merit and without external interference, emphasizing that the evidence gathered by the investigative team justifies the filing of cases in court. He clarified that the probe was initiated through a motu proprio process and was not directed by his office.
Meanwhile, Marcoleta has denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence and claiming that the case is politically motivated and intended to silence dissent.
The development has come amid public demonstrations by supporters of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, who have expressed opposition to the filing of charges against the senator. The case is expected to move forward as the Ombudsman continues its review of the evidence and prepares formal charges.
